株式会社モーションアクター YouTubeチャンネル 【The best Japanese sword⑦~making process~《日本刀ができるまで 刀鍛冶編》 】

川崎 晶平 -MOTION ACTOR INC-

The 7th session is the process from "Sunobe," which determines the size of the sword, to "Hizukuri," which creates the style of the sword. The "Kissaki", which determines the sword's coolness, is also formed at this stage. Almost all of the work is done using only hand hammering. You can enjoy Akihira's high technical skill in this session.

【Highlights】

Akihira and Sugiguchi explain the previous process. Their cute smiles are a nice glimpse into the relationship between the two of them.

01:07

The current appearance of the iron is rod-shaped. The shape is almost the same as the dimensions of the sword as assumed by Akihira. The direction of "nakago" and "kissaki" can be seen from the "Machi" part.

01:28

Sugiguchi's tension is at its highest! Lovely!

02:19

Akihira describes the "mune" of a sword. Akihira's eye can clearly see the difference between "Kawagane(skin iron)" and "Shingane(core iron)". This is because each iron is forged in a different direction.

03:00

After this, the iron is further pounded to adjust the length, etc. The "kissaki" is also formed. The process of making the kissaki is a key point of attention.

03:08

The iron is cut off in the opposite direction to the expected shape of the cutting edge. Then, the "Kissaki" is shaped in the correct direction by hand hammer. By doing so, the "Hahagane(blade steel)" can be spread all the way to the tip. Also, the mixed steel at the tip is cut off so that the steel can be homogeneous all the way to the tip of the "Kissaki".

04:23

"Sunobe" : Forge the skin steel and core steel into the lenge of the sword.

05:08

The Master of sword is a maestro who manipulates iron with charcoal and fire. Cool!

05:45

Mark to the point where the tip of the sword is to be cut off. Akihira then observes the "Ha(blade)" and "Mune" and does not correct them. He makes a judgment based on his knowledge of all the conditions of the iron.

06:34

"Kissaki(cutting edge)" shaping. Please enjoy the advanced technique of creating a beautiful "Kissaki" by simply tapping rhythmically with a hand hammer.

08:17

The overall length and shape of the sword will also be prepared.

08:36

The hands of a sword smith are constantly exposed to harsh conditions. Yet, Akihira's hands are usually kept very clean.

08:57

Have you noticed that the sword has a "Sori" (curved)?

09:08

The current swords have a curved "Mune" as in "Sakaba-tou", but after the "Hi-ire" process, the blade side is curved.

09:53

"Hizukuri". This is the process of hammering the sword into the shape of a Japanese sword.

10:23

The blade side is tapped and hammered out thin. As the blade is formed, the border with the mune becomes visible, just like the "Japanese sword" we imagine.

11:37

This is a "Moe(萌え)" point! :)

11:57

Finally, the Sugiguchi sword is clearly visible!
